Regent Ups The Ante On Cruise Entertainment Post-refurb

Regent Ups the Ante on Cruise Entertainment Post-Refurb
(5:30 p.m. EDT) — Seven Seas Mariner , the last of Regent Seven Seas ‘ ships to emerge from dry dock, has some interesting new entertainment in store.
“We’re excited,” said Michael Day, vice president of entertainment for Prestige Cruise Holdings, the parent company that oversees both Regent and Oceania . “We’ve got a whole new theater [with new seating, lighting and even an LED video wall], and in addition to that, we’re bringing four new shows.”
A combination of acrobatics and music, “Cirque Rock ‘n’ Roll” will debut on the ship during its current sailing from Monte Carlo to Venice — and it’s the line’s biggest show ever. Put together by producer Jean Ann Ryan, it’s described by Day as “a mix of rock ‘n’ roll — older rock and new rock — with strength stunts on stage and beautiful aerial work on silks and hoops.” Performances will feature 12 singers and dancers and eight musicians, who will play tunes from the likes of Michael Jackson, Pink, Queen, Elvis and others.
“Film Flashbacks” will appeal to anyone who’s a sucker for a great movie soundtrack. Featuring songs from “Fame,” “Footloose,” “The Blues Brothers” and “Dirty Dancing,” it’s a Hollywood experience.
“Dancing in the Streets” is billed by Day as “a block party of different styles of dance music.” Enlisting the help of choreographers from New York, Las Vegas, Paris and Los Angeles (some of whom have worked with the popular television show “So You Think You Can Dance”), Regent has prepared its dancers to get their groove on.
Finally, a staple on all three of Regent’s vessels, “Broadway” offers bits from Broadway shows that are currently running. Day tells Cruise Critic that the newest additions to the show are snippets from “Cinderella” and “Kinky Boots.”
All shows onboard run between 45 and 50 minutes. “It’s important to remember that these guests have been out touring all day, so we can’t do a 90-minute show,” Day explains. Due to the line’s open-seating dining policy, only one performance is offered on each show night.
In addition to a revamped theater, Seven Seas Mariner’s multimillion-dollar upgrades also include new carpeting, upholstery and decor, as well as two brand-new bars: a stone-fronted bar in the Horizon Lounge and a backlit bar in the Observation Lounge, which offers 270-degree views. The spa, operated by Canyon Ranch, also received a facelift with new steam rooms, and the fitness center gained updated exercise equipment.

Propeller Problem On P&o Cruise Ship Causes Three-day Delay

Propeller Problem on P&O Cruise Ship Causes Three-Day Delay
(1:10 p.m. EDT) — For the second time in six weeks, a broken propeller shaft seal is hampering a P&O Cruises ship.
P&O’s Oceana will be delayed for three days in Barcelona while repairs are made to the ship.
Passengers onboard will receive 25 percent cash refund as compensation for the delay, and the line is adding a “comprehensive programme of entertainment and shore excursions,” according to a statement from the line.
The statement said: “Oceana will be spending an additional three days alongside in Barcelona during cruise E406 due to a technical issue. This has no impact whatsoever on the safe operation of the ship but requires time in port to undertake the work. As a result the calls to Alghero, Cartagena and La Coruna have been replaced by an extended stay in Barcelona.
The Southampton Echo newspaper published text from a letter P&O’s head of marketing Christopher Edgington sent to passengers apologising for the delay and explaining that a specialist dive team was required to carry out an underwater repair to the broken seal. The repair typically takes about 70 hours.
“We decided on Barcelona to make this repair because it is a fantastic city with lots to see and do with great bars and restaurants,” Edgington said in the letter.
Oceana will sail to Barcelona from Southampton on April 5, on a 14-night Mediterranean cruise.
In late February, P&O’s Oriana suffered a broken propeller shaft seal that slowed the ship and ultimately forced the line to cut short a cruise by three days to make repairs.

Luxury cruise innovator Crystal Cruises is expanding its roster of active, immersive experiences ashore with 16 bicycle Crystal Adventures in 2014.  Throughout Northern and Western Europe and the Mediterranean, travelers can enjoy some of the world’s most striking architecture, charming villages, spectacular seaside views and historically profound sites, often best – and sometimes only – accessed on bicycle.  Offered with May-September voyages aboard Crystal Symphony and Crystal Serenity, the half- and full-day excursions combine fitness with new, intimate perspectives on favorite destinations such as:
Malta – A 12.5-mile route travels through countryside only accessible by bicycle and along the western coastline toward the highest point in Malta, the Dingli Cliffs – dramatically sheering straight down to the Mediterranean Sea and providing spectacular panoramic views.
Tallinn – Guests will seemingly cycle back in time as they ride to the Baroque palace and summer home of Peter the Great, and around the UNESCO World Heritage Site that is the city’s Old Town, complete with ancient walls, cobblestone lanes and 16th century architecture – including a pharmacy that has been in business since 1422.
Copenhagen – In one of the world’s most bike-friendly cities, guests can truly experience the sites as the locals do, including a winding, five-mile ride through a forest en route to a 500-year-old amusement park (the world’s oldest), Bakken, where they’ll have time to play and explore.
Bordeaux/Bassens – Along a nine-mile combination of flat and hilly roads in the quaint village of Saint-Émilion – whose entire wine “jurisdiction” is a UNESCO World Heritage Site – where guests will enjoy views of beautiful chateaus and expansive vineyards of such premier estates as Château Angélus, Figeac and Cheval Blanc.
Barcelona – An invigorating five-mile ride through the city’s bustling streets affords the opportunity to admire the profoundly impressive architecture of the cathedrals and other icons, while also enjoying performances from street artists that liven up the La Rambla boulevard.
Guernsey/St. Peter Port – Along a six-mile stunning coastal path, travelers can marvel equally at L’Ancresse and Pembroke beaches and the Le Dehus Dolmen, home to Neolithic-era tombs that resemble a miniature Stonehenge.
With Crystal’s 2014 European voyages, bicycle adventures are also offered in Valencia and Mallorca, Spain; Corfu, Greece; Dubrovnik, Croatia; Helsinki, Finland; Holyhead, Wales; Kotor, Montenegro; Skagen, Denmark; St. Tropez, France; and St. Petersburg, Russia.
“Many guests have become increasingly interested in more athletic pursuits that allow them to enjoy a destination in a more up close and personal way,” says John Stoll, vice president of land programs.  “The bicycle excursions not only foster personal connections with the scenery and surrounding cultures, but also with each other.  Each cycling group builds a special camaraderie as they share these experiences.”
With all the details of the bicycle Crystal Adventures arranged by Crystal’s staff and expert partners ashore, including helmets, bottled water, refreshments in most locales and terrain-appropriate bikes, prices for bicycling excursions in Europe range from $89 to $249 per person.
In 2014, the line’s luxurious ships will sail 23 European voyages of 7 to 14 days, with shorter “Crystal Getaways” and extended combination cruises also available.  Until April 30, 2014, all-inclusive “Book Now” cruise fares for the line’s European sailings start at $1,730 per person.
Crystal’s passion for creating exclusive, eye-opening luxury shore-side experiences are cornerstones of its Crystal Adventures program, earning the line top ratings for two decades.  Bicycle trips are also offered in North America this fall, from Halifax and Bar Harbor to Key West and Cabo San Lucas.
Stoll adds, “For many, it is a lifelong dream to cycle through Europe’s most beautiful landscapes – a dream one wouldn’t necessarily expect to fulfill while on a cruise.”
